eyes on fire // blue foundation

The first time i heard Blue Foundation was in a hostel in Copenhagen in 2004, days before Christmas. Their album was playing in the lobby, mellow sexy trip-hop buckling through the woodsy, twinkly-lit, cozy lobby that belied the truth beyond the doors to the “bedrooms.”
The TRUTH was an absolutely massive industrial room with 50-foot ceilings, about 500 bunk beds, and halogen lights that stayed on ALL NIGHT for the drunk partyers who traipsed in until dawn, so they could see exactly how to fumble for what felt like 900 HOURS with the COMBINATION LOCKED METAL LOCKERS that stood in the MIDDLE OF THE ROOM. I slept nary a wink that night, fearful of the cough-spewing goth Romanian with tuberculosis that occupied the bunk below me, and the middle-aged Danish biker with snores that rivaled most top-quality “mufflers” who slept in the top bunk next to me, just a forearm’s length away from the possibility of slapping his face just to stop the snores, even just one snore, to have just ONE half-minute’s respite, from that or from the couple’s inconspicuous fucking just a few feet away.
I remember becoming giddy with fatigue that night, I remember laughing to myself at my own sleepless frustration, having walked the length of the city that day, having drank and danced more than I should have that night, my body NEEDING just a few winks of REM, but no, only Blue Foundation was to be had, whispering out from the lobby in one of the 9238492384 times the door to it opened and slammed closed.
Still love this band though, and her sexy Danish childlike voice. Bet she sleeps pretty well.
